Australia has imposed sanctions on a Russian national for his role in a massive cyberattack on insurance company Medibank, which led to the data leak of nearly 10 million customers.
This was reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reported.
As noted, targeted financial sanctions and an entry ban were imposed on Russian Oleksandr Yermakov after Australian authorities linked him to the Medibank hack.
“These people are cowards and scum. They’re hiding behind technology and today the Australian government is showing they can identify you and make sure you’re held accountable,” said Australian Home Affairs Minister Claire O’Neill.
This is the first time Australia has implemented the cyber sanctions system since its adoption in 2021. The sanctions include criminal liability, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine, if Yermakov is provided with any assets, including cryptocurrency wallets or “ransomware” payments.
Monash University cybersecurity professor Nigel Fair said sanctions may not arrest the hacker or deter others from cyberattacking Australian assets, but the government’s move was “a step in the right direction”.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Australian Federal Police announced that Russian hackers were behind the cyber attack on insurance company Medibank in 2022, which resulted in the data of almost 10 million of its current and former customers being leaked.
