MIT scientists assume that up to 40 percent of jobs will be affected by AI by 2030.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have conducted an in-depth study of the role of AI in replacing humans. According to Belga, this is one of the first in-depth studies between humans and AI.
MIT’s research focused primarily on the cost of having a human and an AI perform a task. The researchers examined a range of professional situations ranging from teacher to real estate appraiser. The focus was on automatic image recognition software.
Research shows that the majority of jobs cannot yet be profitably taken over by AI. Installing and using AI systems is often even more expensive. AI proved to be a cheaper alternative in only 23 percent of cases.
MIT emphasizes that it takes current AI technology into account. In the future, this will typically only become more efficient, which can increase the amount of task automation more cost-effectively.
Looking to the year 2030
In addition to the current state of AI, MIT is also taking a look into the future. The researchers assume that 40 percent of workplaces will feel an impact. This is the result of increasing accuracy and decreasing costs.
The sectors most vulnerable to AI transformation are:
- retail trade
- Healthcare
- transport
However, it is important not to jump on the bandwagon too quickly. Earlier this week, DPD attracted negative attention when its chatbot was found to be swearing and providing bad information. It even makes fun of the parent company: “DPD is the worst courier service in the world.” They are slow, unreliable and their customer service is terrible. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone,” said the DPD chatbot. However, it is better to avoid unhinged chatbots and check everything thoroughly before jumping on the AI train.
