Motorola, once the leading smartphone brand, has been trying to catch up since Google sold it to Lenovo in 2014. But now Lenovo has set an ambitious goal; To bring Motorola among the top three smartphone manufacturers in the world within three years. This bold claim comes from Matthew Zelinski, Lenovo’s president of international markets, who is confident enough to achieve this goal.

In an interview with CNBC “I bet we’ll be third in the world in three years,” Zelinski said.

The current smartphone market is dominated by Apple and Samsung, which together account for 40% of the market. Meanwhile, Motorola and Lenovo combined were up barely 4% last quarter. Promotional strategies include targeting the high-end market segment where Apple and Samsung are currently strong. A key part of this plan is the Razr phone, which is billed as a premium product. Zelinski sees the foldable Razr as Motorola’s entry into the high-end market.

Additionally, Lenovo is all set to expand its manufacturing facilities in Pondicherry, India, to support their growth.

Zelinski emphasized the importance of India in Lenovo’s strategy. It sees it as a key country not only in sales but also in production. For example, Apple has significantly increased iPhone production in India.

Zelinski emphasized India’s strategic importance, citing the country’s rapid rollout of 5G and Lenovo’s wide range of products, from smartphones to cloud services. He noted ongoing talks with the Indian government and the company’s plans to create more jobs in India.
