WhatsApp is working on a new way to share files. This is a functionality noticeably different Everything we see in the app seems to be inspired by the sharing options available in the operating systems of our mobile phones.

When we share files on WhatsApp, we usually do so directly from that person’s chat window. This means we need to know your number in order to do this. The latest version of the app is an alternative for easily sharing files between nearby devices.

Share files on WhatsApp without knowing your number

According to WABetaInfo, the Meta messaging app is working internally on a file sharing function similar to the one it offers us. iOS AirDrop or for Android, select Share with Nearby. The idea here, as we said, is to share files with other people nearby who have WhatsApp.

In order to start file sharing, both people must be close and enter the “Nearby People” section within the application. Once this step is completed, they will be visible in the menu and can send requests to share images, videos, or any type of stored file.

Two of the most interesting aspects of this future functionality is that it will allow you to share files with strangers. In this case, the phone numbers of both participants will remain secret. Likewise, the app promises to ensure the security of end-to-end encryption throughout the process.

Some details about this new functionality will emerge over time. We don’t know right now if there will be a limit. Currently the maximum size supported by the messaging app is 2 GB. As our colleagues at Xataka Android say, WhatsApp is not designed to send large files.

It should be noted that this functionality has been detected in internal testing and is currently not available In beta versions of the application. As a result, it is not possible for more experienced users to try it. We have to wait to see if it will eventually be distributed to everyone.
