Google Chrome is launching (in the US) three new AI-powered features

Last December It’s been 16 years since Google Chrome was launched, the browser with which the search engine launched to compete with the applications that dominated the market at the time, i.e. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and in the niche market that was the Apple ecosystem at the time (remember that smartphones, including the iPhone, were still very early stage) Apple Safari. While we can imagine this was part of their plans, I wonder if they ever dared the success they would achieve.

According to StatCounter data, Google Chrome surpassed Firefox (second until then) in late 2011 and Internet Explorer in mid-2012 to become the most used browser in the world. a position he has not left since, closing year after year as the majority choice of users. There is no single reason for this success story, as it usually happens in these cases, we always have to look at the confluence of circumstances.

In my opinion, the success of Google Chrome is due to the sum of the great importance of Google on the Internet, the great integration of the browser into the company’s set of services, the more than positive image that the company had in the first decade of this century and, of course, and as the main point of constant innovation. Google knows the stakes are high, especially since its main rivals in the browser wars have decided to switch to Chromium, and in response Sometimes we find new features that Chrome wants to excel at among his rivals.

During the year 2023, artificial intelligence was a trendy technologyand all indications are that 2024 will be similar in this sense, and as of Google I/O 2023, search engines are more active than ever in this sense. So, as we can read in the Keyword, Google Chrome is going to add three new features based on artificial intelligence. Of course, as already hinted at in the title, they will initially only be available to users in the United States, although the company’s plans include expanding the geographic reach later.

The first of the announced features, which I find particularly interesting given the way I usually use the browser, is automatic arrangement of cards. As you may have already imagined, when this function is invoked, Google Chrome analyzes all open tabs and organizes them into groups depending on their content. As of this writing, I have 24 tabs open in this window alone (I have two others open), so you can imagine how handy this feature can be for me.

The web browser is in many cases the most used application on a daily basis, so it’s always nice to be able to customize it according to our taste, and in this place I’m not only talking about its functions, keyboard shortcuts, etc., but also about something as basic and important as it gets in our eyes well. To meet this need, which is also important, Google Chrome will include a AI topic generation featurevery similar to the one we find since October on Android 14 and Pixel 8 devices.

If we talk about artificial intelligence, it is clear that generative text models are among the most popular uses of this technology. So in a future update Google Chrome will add the Help me Write function (help me write), which will be available in the text fields of the websites that users access, and which, as its name suggests, will be able to write us its content, be it a review, a reply, a request for information, etc.
