Samsung has announced the launch of the SSD 990 EVO, the Korean giant’s first internal storage solution that supports the PCIe 5.0 interface.

The 990 EVO SSD is the successor to the 970 EVO Plus series, which was launched years ago for the PCIe 3.0 interface. On it, it offers a performance improvement of up to 43% at speeds Sequential read speed up to 5,000 MB/s and write speed up to 4,200 MB/s. Random read and write performance reaches up to 700,000 and 800,000 IOPS.

These aren’t mind-blowing performance figures, and Samsung has a much faster 990 PRO on the market, but it’s worth pointing out that this is a refresh of its economy range. It excels with dual native compatibility with the dual interface that Samsung says, PCIe Gen4 x4 as well as Gen5 x2. It is interesting that Samsung, like other big players in the SSD sector, has not yet made the leap to PCIe Gen5, either for commercial reasons or because of the issue of temperatures.
