A seasonal surge in demand for smartphones, TVs and laptops helped LG Display end the latest quarter with a profit for the first time in seven quarters, according to Reuters. If market demand remains unstable this year, the company expects to further strengthen its position in the OLED segment. The company’s revenue in the fourth quarter increased 1% to $5.5 billion.
According to Sung Hyun Kim (Sung-hyun Kim), chief financial officer of LG Display, conditions of uncertainty regarding display demand dynamics consist in the continued instability of the macroeconomy. According to him, this will not prevent the company from strengthening its competitive position regarding OLED display production. LG Display, which closed the last quarter with an operating profit of $98.67 million, suffered a significant operating loss of $654 million a year ago.
While the OLED type panel revenues obtained in the last quarter in the smartphone segment contributed to this, the demand for medium and large size panels increased in the laptop and TV segment in line with seasonal trends. In the current quarter, demand will inevitably decline due to seasonal events, but according to this year’s results, the company expects an improvement in financial indicators, as it closed last year with an operating loss of $1.87 billion.
In addition, it is LG Display that provides displays for the Apple Vision augmented reality headset, and in the television equipment segment it must work on orders from Samsung Electronics. Experts expect sales of small and medium-sized OLED panels to increase this year as device manufacturers run out of existing stocks.
