Germany gets the honor and will host the first European exascale computer called Jupiter. This supercomputer is built in a modular data center consisting of container units. This is a new approach from the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC). The advantage of this method is a shorter planning and setup time while at the same time lower construction and operating costs.
The first European supercomputer called Jupiter is installed in Germany and gets a special home. The Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) is responsible for the project and is pursuing a new approach to containerizing the Jupiter infrastructure. According to JSC, the complex will consist of around fifty container modules covering an area of more than 2,300 square meters.
The container modules are expected to include twenty IT modules, fifteen power supply modules and ten logistics modules. The racks with Jupiter’s infrastructure are integrated into the containers before delivery. This happens along with cooling, power, networking and cabling. This reduces the risk of errors that are only discovered after installation.
Jupiter, purchased by the European Hih Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), will be the first exascale computer in Europe capable of running more than one exaflop. In addition to Jupiter, which has the honor of being the first to be hosted, several other supercomputers are planned for Europe: Daedalus in Greece, Levente in Hungary, Caspir in Ireland and EHPCPL in Poland.
