Oppo has brought an excellent mid-range cell phone onto the market with the Reno 10. The smartphone does almost everything right, but the competition in this segment is fierce and Oppo doesn’t take this into account enough.
The Oppo Reno 10 looks good. The matt glossy back belongs to the premium segment and the same applies to the 6.7-inch display, which curves gently into the frame. Anyone who picks up this device immediately feels like they are holding something valuable in their hands. This is no coincidence: Oppo’s Reno series has a more lifestyle-oriented approach and the perfectly crafted case fits this image perfectly.
Bright
We can’t complain about the screen either. Oppo has installed a 6.7-inch AMOLED display in the device with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,412 pixels (20:9). The refresh rate of 120 Hz is more than competitive, as is the brightness. The phone supports HDR and can be further enhanced in direct sunlight so everything remains readable.
The beautiful screen adds to the smooth experience. Under the hood of the Oppo Reno 10, Oppo installs a modest MediaTek Dimensity 7050, which, together with the sufficient 8 GB of RAM, is sufficient for everyday use. However, don’t expect a speed demon here: the benchmark results are very average.
We see this story again from the graphic side. Compared to other devices in this segment, the Oppo Reno 10 once again performs averagely. The same applies: this is fine for everyday use, but if you are looking for an ultimate performance monster, for example for playing 3D games, then there are better options.
Theoretically, the performance of the Oppo Reno 10 is completely sufficient compared to other devices in this price range. Only at the recommended retail price of 509 euros including VAT. This smartphone is slightly more expensive than its competitors. There’s nothing in return in terms of horsepower and there’s no need for it, but Oppo has to make a difference somewhere to justify the price.
Cameras
Then on to the cameras. Oppo equips the Oppo Reno 10 with a 64 MP main camera and a 32 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. According to the manufacturer, this 2x is magical because the proportions with the lens roughly correspond to what humans see. In addition, it is ideal for portrait photography. There is also an 8 MP wide-angle camera.
The main camera and zoom are certainly not doing too badly. In general, the photos are quite vibrant and sharp, although they don’t necessarily outperform other mid-range devices.
The 2x camera proves to be an absolute added value in many scenarios. It is the second high-quality camera with which Oppo wants to stand out from the competition. The level roughly corresponds to that of the main camera.
2x cameraMain camera
We can be brief about the wide-angle lens: it does what you would expect from a camera with a very modest 8 MP rear sensor. Frankly, we wonder why manufacturers make their devices even heavier with such outdated cameras.
In low light conditions the situation becomes more complex and the results are mixed. In some cases the Oppo Reno 10 delivers beautiful images, in other cases we see a dark soup that is surpassed by the cameras of cheaper smartphones.
All in all, we are satisfied with the cameras, but the Google Pixel 7a performs noticeably better and some other (cheaper) devices are in no way inferior to the main camera. According to Oppo, the 2x lens with 32 MP sensor should make the difference.
Good condition
The Oppo Reno 10 packs a large 5,000mAh battery, making the phone a top performer in our benchmark tests. Only a few smartphones perform better. So you can start your day with peace of mind with this device.
If you need an outlet, you don’t have to be too patient. After nineteen minutes you can fill the battery half full again. This is slower than the other fast charging champions in this segment, but significantly faster than smartphones without a real fast charger. Good enough, we’d say, if this phone wasn’t the most expensive on the list.
In a vacuum, this is a very good smartphone. The workmanship is excellent, as is the battery, the cameras generally perform well and we are also fans of the software, even if we are disgusted by the large amount of bloatware that Oppo sends along. The general conditions are also good: Oppo promises three years of OS updates and four years of security updates, making it at least as good as most other manufacturers.
Everything for the camera
Of course, you don’t buy a phone in a vacuum. If we add everything up, the price is a bit too high. The Oppo Reno 10 does a lot of things right, but so does the Google Pixel 7a. It currently costs significantly less (399 euros), but still delivers more spectacular photos. The OnePlus Nord 3 is also on the shelves today and is also cheaper (449 euros). The OnePlus’ photos are a little less good, but otherwise you have an almost identical device in your hands.
If we put everything side by side, it seems to us that the additional cost comes entirely from the 32MP/2x camera. This is indeed a unique advantage. If you’re sticking with it because you want to take a lot of portrait photos, for example, or you just like the ratio of a 2x lens like this, then the Oppo Reno 10 is certainly not a bad choice.
