The Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) has released the first photo of the SLIM probe since its moon landing about a week ago.
This was reported by Space.com, according to Ukrinform’s report.
The photo was taken by the LEV-2 robotic rover, also known as SORA-Q, one of two small lunar rovers flying to Earth’s moon with SLIM.
“SORA-Q is the first Japanese robot to land on the moon and take photographs,” said Kintaro Toyama, president of Takara Tomy in Japan, which developed LEV-2 along with JAXA, Sony and Doshiya University.
It was noted that SLIM landing on the “head” of the probe, as seen in the photo, was not a desired development of events. The lander failed to accumulate solar energy as expected.
However, the photo reaching the flight control center shows that the LEV-2 and LEV-1 vehicles were deployed with SLIM during the descent to the Earth satellite as planned and successfully operated on the lunar surface. .
As reported by Ukrinform, SLIM landed on the Moon on January 19, but its functioning remained in question as SLIM lost power a few hours after landing.
