The Community Executive has sent a statement of objection to Cermaq, Grieg Seafood, Bremnes, Lerøy, Mowi and SalMar, informing them that their agreements and information sharing may constitute practices that are contrary to European competition standardsaccording to their preliminary findings.
Brussels believes the six salmon producers exchanged “confidential” information on prices, quantities, sales volumes and production capacity, as well as other indicators that influence final prices. between 2011 and 2019.
The agency, led by Denmark’s Margrethe Vestager, said the aim was to “reduce the usual uncertainty in the spot market for farmed Norwegian Atlantic salmon in the European Union.”
The investigation only covers cash sales and does not include the six Norwegian firms’ long-term contracts with their clients.
Pacts sought affect the price of whole and gutted salmonwhich account for 80% of all farmed Atlantic salmon exports from Norway, and do not affect frozen specimens or processed products such as fillets, loins or smoked salmon.
The six affected companies face possible fines if the Commission confirms its initial suspicions during the investigation, but the agency cautioned that the charge brought today does not predetermine the final outcome of the investigation.
