Apple updated its website this week to confirm that the first US car models with next-generation CarPlay support will launch in 2024, but didn’t give a more specific time frame or say when availability would begin in other countries.

Apple used the phrase “first models arriving in 2024” instead of “Vehicle announcements in late 2023” in the next-generation CarPlay section of its website. The first beta of iOS 17.4 released today hints at eight new CarPlay apps, contributors discovered MacRumors Aaron Parris and Steve Moser:

  • Automatic settings: This app allows you to control paired iPhones and adjust vehicle settings.
  • Car camera: This app will display information from the vehicle’s rear view camera.
  • To exercise: For electric vehicles, this app shows the battery level, charging status, time left until the battery is fully charged, etc. will show.
  • Climate: This app gives you access to the car’s microclimate controls in CarPlay, allowing you to adjust the temperature of the air conditioning or heating system, fan speed, heated seats, heated steering wheel and more.
  • Closing: This app will show if any of the car’s doors are open and can also display the car’s warning symbols.
  • Media: This app will give you access to CarPlay’s FM and AM radio controls, as well as other media options like SiriusXM. It’s unclear whether SiriusXM will offer satellite connectivity or remain limited to Internet streaming. Users will be able to choose from a list of music genres such as Top 40 and Rock.
  • Tire pressure: This app will show the air pressure of each car tire and warn you about low pressure, high pressure and flat tire.
  • Trips: This app provides information such as average vehicle speed, fuel economy or energy efficiency, total elapsed time and distance traveled during the trip, etc. Provides a variety of driving-related data, including:

An image released in the iOS 17.4 beta shows that the next-gen CarPlay will likely display a “Goodbye” screen after the driver turns off the car:

As previously announced by Apple, additional images in the iOS 17.4 beta confirm that users will be able to customize the next-generation CarPlay theme and color scheme (including dashboard appearance):

Apple introduced the new generation CarPlay for the first time in June 2022. The interface can be tailored to a specific vehicle model and the automaker’s signature style, as previously introduced by Aston Martin and Porsche in late December. Aston Martin said it will launch its first cars with next-generation CarPlay in 2024, including the new model of the DB12 premium sports car. Porsche did not offer a timeframe or specific details about its own plans.

When Apple first announced next-generation CarPlay, Apple said interested automakers included Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault and Volvo. It’s unclear if this list has changed since it was first announced, other than the addition of Aston Martin.

Apple did not specify whether new generation CarPlay features will be available in existing cars with classic CarPlay support. Apple has said that iOS 17.4 will be released in March, so perhaps more details can be announced at that time.
