Huawei returns to top five in Chinese smartphone market

Canalys recently released the latest data on the Chinese mobile phone market for the last quarter of 2023. The report shows that the decline in the Chinese mobile phone market slowed in the fourth quarter. During this period, smartphone shipments reached 73.9 million units; This is only 1% less than the same period last year.

Ranked among the top five sales leaders Apple, Onur, Vivo, Huawei and Xiaomi. Huawei, in particular, reported a significant 47% increase in shipments compared to last year, bringing them back to fourth place.

Looking at the numbers, Apple led the way with shipments of 17.5 million units in the fourth quarter, up 6% from last year. Honor ranked second with 16% market share and 11.7 million units shipped. Vivo ranked third with sales of 11.3 million units.

Huawei, which increased its delivery volume by 47%, ranked fourth by delivering 10.4 million units. According to Lucas Zhong, a research analyst at Canalys, Huawei’s comeback is largely due to the “Mate 60 Pro using in-house Kirin chips and innovative features such as satellite search.” Xiaomi ranked in the top five with 9.5 million units shipped.

Meanwhile, smartphone shipments in China for the whole of 2023 fell by 5% to 273 million units. Apple reached a major milestone by topping the annual shipment chart in mainland China for the first time, with a slight 1% increase in shipments and a market share rising to 19%.

Vivo, Oppo and Honor held a stable market share of 16% with annual shipments of 44.5 million, 43.9 million and 43.6 million units respectively.

Xiaomi maintained fifth place in the market with a share of 13%. Huawei, ranked sixth, has seen significant growth, with its market share increasing from 8% in 2022 to 12% in 2023 and shipments increasing by 48%.
