It all started in September last year, when strange posts were discovered on the social network in the name of Minister Annalena Berbok about the cancellation of support for Ukraine. At the same time, the profile and everything else looked absolutely original. A careful examination revealed it to be a fake, with Cyrillic letters indicating the source. The post was also actively shared by fictional users.

The fake tweet is part of a pro-Russian campaign, as determined by experts from the Strategic Communications Department of the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With the help of special software, they investigated posts on X between December 20 and January 20 and discovered more than 50 fake accounts coordinated to promote certain information in German. In total, it was possible to find more than 1 million such posts, on some days their number reached 200 thousand. It looks like the messages are sent by bots because they appear to be based on a controlled algorithm.

In addition to the accounts of politicians, fake news is also distributed on behalf of the leading German media, and these are actively disseminated, mostly by unsuspecting citizens.

The narrative that the German state was ignoring the interests of its own citizens in favor of helping Ukrainians was particularly widespread. The aim is to undermine trust in the government and mass media, sow hatred against Ukraine and reduce its support.

The strategy is old, pay attention to the special services that have been monitoring the actions of the Russians for a long time, but admit that technical capabilities have never been used so skillfully.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs experts, this new wave is part of the campaign that Russia has been running under the name “Bilateral” since 2022. Its target is not only Germany, but also France, England, Italy and Ukraine.

The threat for Germany is now serious, because this year there will be not only elections to the European Parliament, but also elections in many federal states of Germany, where the Russians will most likely try to intervene.

The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared its findings with the EU vs Desinfo center, where they will conduct the investigation.

As reported, shortly before the start of a full-scale Russian war, the Federal Government of Germany commissioned the interagency group AG Hybrid to study the hybrid war of the Russian Federation and will soon submit a report with the results of its work.
