Guterres orders an investigation into the possible involvement of UNRWA members in Hamas attacks

UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterresordered investigation to clarify what is possible implication members UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the largest in Gaza, in the October 7 attacks carried out by its armed wing Hamas against Israel.

According to a statement from his press secretary, Guterres was first informed by the office’s Commissioner General: Philippe Lazzariniabout “extremely serious allegations” regarding an unknown number certain UNRWA members in those attacks that “horrified” Guterres.

After this he asked Lazzarini quick researchand it ends dismissal “and potential criminal prosecution” against any agency employee proven to have participated in these events, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people, the majority of whom were Israeli civilians, and kidnapping of another 240 people.

In addition to this specific investigation, Guterres announced a more global investigation. General activities of UNRWA.

Israel has repeatedly accused UNRWA of complicity with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and assured that some of its members are in fact militants of the Islamist group, something the UN has always denied.

Moreover, these accusations helped Israel cast doubt neutrality of UN agencies in general and all its agencies, including the Secretary General.

WITH more than 30 thousand employeesUNRWA is the largest organization in Gaza outside the Gaza Strip government.
