An international team of astronomers has discovered a new type of star near the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

As reported by Ukrinform, Weather.

Scientists called the 21 red stars they discovered “old smokers” because they observed how they “smoke” in the form of clouds of gas.

These stars are said to be a type of red giant that forms in the dying phase of medium-sized stars like our Sun after they run out of hydrogen necessary for nuclear fusion.

Astronomers from the UK, Chile, South Korea, Brazil, Germany and Italy have made the groundbreaking discovery after observing nearly a billion stars in infrared light during a 10-year survey of the night sky.

They were assisted by the British Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope (VISTA), based at Cerro Paranal Observatory in the Chilean Andes.

In addition to the “old smokers,” the team of astronomers also discovered 32 newborn stars, known as protostars, that underwent extreme outbursts over months, years, or decades as part of the formation of a new solar system.

As reported by Ukrinform, a study by British astronomers has revealed that our ideas about the colors of the planets Neptune and Uranus are wrong, with both giant planets having similar shades of greenish-blue.
