It is a wireless probe implanted in the brain, consisting of a light-emitting diode with a diameter of approximately 300 microns and a photodetector coated with a phosphorescent film that is highly sensitive to surrounding oxygen molecules.
The working principle of the device consists of emitting phosphorescent light, the brightness of which will decrease as the partial oxygen pressure increases, which is an important indicator of its level in the brain. Conversely, when hypoxia, that is, lack of oxygen, occurs in the brain tissues, the probe will emit a very bright light.
According to the developers, the device responds almost instantly to changes in the oxygen level in the brain; response time is less than a second.
It was reported that the probe was successfully tested on mice and proved its effectiveness during continuous monitoring of the partial pressure of oxygen in the deep parts of the brain of rodents and managed to record the state of cerebral hypoxia in various scenarios, including acute hypoxia. ischemia
The developers hope that in the future, with the help of this device, it will be possible to monitor the condition of patients with risks of epilepsy, brain tumors, strokes and intracranial injuries and provide timely medical assistance to prevent serious consequences for their health.
