fashion brand Fossil He announced that the era has passed for the smart watch business. In a statement to The Verge, the group said it was leaving the category. Fossil entered this segment a few years ago and was an early adopter of Google’s Wear OS. Notably, the company achieved this success even when other OEMs were not interested in the smartwatch operating system.
Fossil is exiting the smartwatch business altogether. For those who don’t know, the group produces smart watches under its main brand, Skagen, Diesel and many other sub-brands. This means that the Fossil Gen 6, released in 2021, is the brand’s last smartwatch.
“Fossil Group is reallocating resources to support our core strength and core business segments that continue to provide us with strong growth opportunities,” Fossil spokesperson Amanda Castelli told The Verge. The smartwatch landscape has changed significantly in the past period, she added. for several years and the decision to leave the job is strategic. This is understandable, considering Fossil is in the worst stages of Wear OS. But everything changed forever when Google and Samsung teamed up to develop Wear OS 3 based on Android 11.
Castelli said Fossil will continue to update its Wear OS watches over the next few years. Fossil’s smartwatches were generally a mix of minimalist and trendy designs and featured smart and fitness features. The company was expected to launch Gen 7 last year, but now we know why that didn’t happen. Reddit users reported that Fossil is pulling out of the smartwatch business.
Despite this, Fossil will be missed in the smartwatch segment. Currently, Withings remains the only brand offering hybrid smartwatches on the market.
