Amidst the music streaming craze, a study conducted a few months ago revealed an interesting fact: We prefer to listen to the radio while in the car. Maybe it’s because you’ve forgotten the mental burden of choosing what to listen to and letting others do it for you. Or listening to whoever is on the other side of the waves. Maybe because of the practicality of using less battery and mobile data, and also because it’s free. However, I would rather have The best of both worlds: listening to the radio, but not on AM/FM, but via an app.
Go ahead and yes, of course the data and battery consumption of the mobile phone when using the internet is there, but for me it is worth it. But I always use wired Android Auto. Why use radio app instead of traditional method? Easy: I often go on long journeys from Pamplona to Madrid (and vice versa), which is an ideal time not only to listen to music or catch up on podcasts, but also to immerse myself in the stations I particularly like. I have been learning Basque for several years, but since moving to Madrid it has been harder to practice, and the Basque stations I listened to while in the Spanish capital are not available on traditional radio.
Because the main advantage of radio in an application is Listen to the radio station you want wherever you are, forgetting that the station was changed and having to retune it, or disappearing when leaving the broadcast area. That’s why I’ve been using TuneIN for a long time, a free radio app compatible with Android Auto and perfectly adapted: This is the experience of using TuneIN on Android Auto.
TuneIN Radio: The radio you want, wherever you want
There’s not much mystery to having TuneIN Radio on Android AutoAs long as it is available for free on the Google Play Store. As always with Android Auto, we will first install the application on the mobile phone and when we get in the vehicle, we will see the application in the main menu in sync with the vehicle’s Google infotainment system.
When we go in, we find a very clear interface that we can learn how to use from the first moment: in the upper area there is a menu with various options such as ‘.Beginning‘, a listening history’End‘, saved stations’favorites‘, explorer’Search‘ and on the far right is the classic magnifying glass used to search for stations. In fact, its design is so good in my opinion that it even surpasses what we see on the car’s screen, whether from the manufacturer or Google.
Normally when I’m in Pamplona and the surrounding areas the station I listen to most is Gaztea (a sort of Basque ‘Los 40’) and Euskadi Irratia for news, so we tap the magnifying glass to look for them. We can type when the car is stopped, but otherwise we will have to dictate it with a simpler experience compared to that of the app. Once we have it, we tap it and playback will start in real time (albeit with some delay). It’s pretty easy. In any case, you can also speed up this process by doing it in advance, before you travel, or in the app itself.
Once you’ve searched and listened to it, it’ll be easy to keep handy as you’ll be able to view it in the ‘Recent’ section that appears at the top of the home screen. For practicality, I also tapped the heart to save them as a favorite. In my case I use the app for these two stations, but for someone who listens to much more It’s nice that the stations are so organized..
When listening to a station, a play button will appear in the lower left corner, similar to those offered by Spotify or Prime Music, intuitive and functional in design and controls. This screen is the one that best integrates the option to show Android Auto Coolwalk split into a mosaic when we use a browser, for example.
in my travels Playback is rarely interruptedBeyond a specific moment of bad signal in mountainous areas or tunnels, this is actually something that almost never happens to me. However, this can also happen to you in classic FM. I also want to emphasize the high sound quality.
Although I realize my usage is very specific, you can use it to listen to news from around the world, radio stations of certain music genres… If you like to listen to various thingsIt’s worth taking a look at the browsing section because it contains radios from around the world, divided into different categories, including some local ones.
There are ads in the free version of TuneIn Radio, but they are more impactful on mobile devices than in the car console, providing a smooth, intuitive and complete experience; This is the reason for this application. becomes indispensable on my car trips and Android Auto.
