The transition from physical SIM cards to eSIM is gaining momentum. eSIM cards integrated into your device offer potential security benefits. With all this said, moving eSIM profiles between devices can still be cumbersome and often requires carrier assistance or new SIM cards. A new development involving Samsung and Pixel devices hints at a simpler approach.
Recognizing the problem, Google announced a solution at last year’s Mobile World Congress, a new eSIM transfer tool for Android. The tool will allow users to safely and quickly transfer their mobile plans to new devices without the need for physical SIM cards.
While Google didn’t offer details or a launch date, users setting up Pixel 8 devices noticed it as early as last October. It looks like this tool has now become more accessible.
A user who recently installed his brand new Galaxy S24 Ultra using Samsung’s SIM transfer tool encountered a new eSIM transfer option during the installation process. According to the user, a pop-up appeared near their LG V60 ThinQ allowing them to transfer their SIM card to the Galaxy S24 Ultra by scanning a QR code.
Samsung had previously introduced its own eSIM transfer tool as part of One UI 5.1, but this was limited to Galaxy devices only. However, a recent development suggests that Android’s eSIM transfer feature will become more compatible across brands and models in the future.
While there are no reports of other brands using this feature, it’s no surprise that Samsung was one of the early adopters of this feature. After all, Samsung and Google have been establishing a solid partnership lately.
However, it’s worth noting that T-Mobile is currently the only carrier in the US to confirm support for this eSIM transfer feature. While the increased interest suggests that wider adoption by other operators may be on the horizon, it is too early to confirm this definitively.
