Japanese terrorist surrenders to police hours before dying of cancer

Satoshi Kirishima, a member of a left-wing extremist group and one of Japan’s most wanted fugitives, has been arrested after more than half a century of searching. However, he died early this Monday in hospital from stomach cancer.

Kirishima, aged about 70, was arrested last week on suspicion of involvement in a series of bombings in the 1970s.

NHK reported that the man said: “I want to use my real name in my last moments” and also gave detailed explanations of the circumstances of the attacks.

His death was reported at a hospital in Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, as a result of incurable cancerThe authorities reported this today.

Kirishima, whose image is still widely displayed on boards in police stations and departments in Japan, has been wanted since 1975 for his alleged involvement in the series bomb attacks in important national companies between 1974 and 1975, including Mitsubishi Heavy industry or Mitsui.

Before his death, he discovered his identity, and it was also revealed that he had worked for many years as a construction contractor in a prefecture near Tokyo under an assumed name.

The fugitive, who managed to hide from the authorities for almost half a century, was at that time part of the so-called East Asian Anti-Japanese Armed Front (Eaajaf, English acronym), a declared Japanese New Left and anarchist-style terrorist organization active between 1972 and 1975.

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries incident in 1974 was one of the most spectacular because it happened in broad daylight when eight people died and another 165 people were seriously injured.

Kirishima was supposed to be responsible for planting and detonating an improvised explosive device at the Korea Industrial Economic Research Institute in the central Tokyo district of Ginza in 1975.

The group, which carried out a series of 12 such attacks, was disbanded after authorities arrested most of its members, who were sometimes associated with or joined the Japanese Red Army.

To date, eight people have been formally charged. Eajaf, two of whom were sentenced to death. EFE
