From the April 2022 results presentation Netflix has made an important change in its pricing and accounting policies. Recall that this moment marked an important change in trend, because although it still remained the most popular service among streaming platforms, its number decreased and they wanted to do much more in the short and medium term. Many things suddenly happened that should not have happened, to the surprise of many.
There were two main changes twist when it comes to the ad plan, which Netflix had denied until then, but confirmed it would do in the exact same results presentation. Moreover, they originally planned to deploy it sometime in 2023 or even 2024, but shortly after that they decided to step on the accelerator, to the point that it ended up debuting in the same year, specifically in November.
Another change, by far the most popular, was the termination of shared accounts… unless users chose to opt out. And although this was a hindrance for many users, The truth is, it looks like it went wellas Netflix accounts seem to have improved, at least in part, due to the additional monetization of those users who shared plans until then, even if they weren’t in the same household.
However, it seems that this was not enough and that The ad-supported plan must be more profitable than originally expected, so a few months ago the company canceled the basic plan in several countries, including Spain. At €7.99 per month, it was the cheapest ad-free plan option. After the cancellation of this plan, which could not be contracted since October of last year, but remained for those who already had it, the most economical ad-free option for new customers is the standard ad-free plan, which costs 12.99 euros.
Now it seems that this expansion is coming to an end, and as we can read in the latest presentation of the results, Netflix is already preparing to eliminate the Basic plan for previous subscribers and will start doing so in the second quarter of 2024. It is true that this document does not explicitly mention the Spanish market, in which Canada and the United Kingdom are explicitly mentioned, but we have seen before that our country is among the first to apply these changes. we can hope it won’t take too long to move to our local market.
