Google begins deployment of Quick Share

During the celebration of the last CES 2024, We learned that Google is going to convert Nearby Sharing to Quick Sharingbecause it was one of the company’s announcements during the first big event in the sector in 2024. If you haven’t seen this announcement, and as a result, you don’t know exactly what we’re talking about, you might be under the mistaken impression that we’re talking about a simple name change, from Sharing Nearby to Quick Share, when we’re actually talking about a much more relevant change.

After several months in the testing phase Google officially launched Nearby Sharing for Windows last July, although it is true that it has been possible to use it in beta since the beginning of April. A beta that I can personally say that I started using it a few days after its launch and that by then it was already so polished that it could have been released as the final version and I would almost put my hand in the fire that it would be produced practically no problem.

With the same function, Apple has AirDrop, Samsung has (had) Quick Share and as we told you a few days ago, WhatsApp is also working on a similar feature. The problem, of course, is that if we continue in this direction, in the medium term we could end up with a lot of different systems for directly sharing data between devices. And of course without compatibility between them to make it more difficult for users.

Fortunately, Google and Samsung decided to row in the opposite direction, confirming earlier this month that both platforms, Nearby sharing and Quick sharing were supposed to converge into a single platform it would keep the name of the Korean solution but add its own technologies to create an even better service. And now, as we can read in Android Police, the change has begun, well Google has already started rolling out Quick Share on Google Pixel smartphones.

At the beginning of this deployment it was planned for February, but it seems that everything should be ready and following the search engine would decide to continue in a few hours to the initial planning, although we do not know the initial scope of this deployment, nor whether what is being shown at the moment is already a complete evolution of nearby sharing to fast sharing, or if, on the contrary, there are still elements waiting to be updated, if Well, this second option seems to me seems less likely.
