Absolute cleanliness, the sidewalks are updated, and the military is in almost every corner of this historical center San Salvadorwhich now, unlike just two years ago, tourists actually wander around.

“I support this”

Mauricio, a 73-year-old pensioner, sits in the square and tells us clearly what will happen in Sunday’s elections:

Why will President Bukele win? He will win with a 90% probability. I support this. Here you are free, everything is not like before, when you could not come here because crime quickly killed you.

Erlinda, 48, is one of the street vendors in this square. When asked if he plans to vote for Bukele, he replies:

Yes, of course, because there is significant progress here in El Salvador. Safety comes first. It used to be huge.

Saul, 56 years old, works in public administration, walks past him:

Well, he’s a good president. He came to remove all the bad evil spirits that were in this country.

Bukele’s enormous popularity can be seen at every turn. The polls point to a stunning victory, which we confirmed even after spending some time trying to find a critical or minimally nuanced voice.

Weakened opposition

“It seems like, yes, we have improved, but mostly in the city. But In agriculture it has decreased; it no longer helps them. As for schools, there is no improvement. He didn’t keep his promises to the schools,” said Maria, 40, who owns a tortilla stand.

The opposition plays on Sunday so as not to remain completely irrelevant. Francisco and Ernesto are members of the pensioners’ association. They receive us at their place just a few blocks from the center and explain.

This led to a series of abuses and arrests that made international news and people were raped. For Bukele, the emergency regime is his greatest achievement. For him, because in other areas it was a complete failure.

“The prosecutor will be given the power to determine who the terrorists are and that is where we are at risk. Because? Because if they call us terrorists, this trade union center, they will come and infiltrate here,” they emphasize.

The two traditional parties that controlled the country’s political scene for three decades National Liberation Front Farabundo Martí and game Nationalist Republican Alliancehave lost much of their support base despite their insistence on extending the term.

They are unable to return them or cope with Bukele’s popularity, which has generated a state of contentment in terms of the security of citizens on a collectively accepted premise: The ends may justify the means when the history of violence becomes unbearable.
