Investment in quantum technology has fallen sharply since last year. Generative AI takes the cake and takes a (large) share.
Last year, quantum companies received 50 percent less venture capital funding. Investors are changing their tactics and investing a large part of their capital in generative AI. The developments in the field of AI are visible and are taking place at a rapid pace, while quantum technology will still take some time to be put into practice.
Quantum in practice
Although quantum technology continues to advance, in practice this is less visible and occurs more slowly. In a world where generative AI is gaining the upper hand, quantum technology is increasingly taking a back seat. There continue to be developments in the area of AI models and tools, making the investment more and more interesting for investors. End users are applying these models in practice on a massive scale, in contrast to quantum technology, which is still in the development phase.
Quantum technology remains important and investments continue to be made, but less and less. In 2022, investments in quantum technology reached a peak of $2.2 billion, and in 2023 researchers and companies had to make do with half that. Quantum technology may be less present in our eyes, but it continues to develop strongly.
