Mega launches a mobile phone offer with three formulas: Spark, lightning And Star. The energy company wants to ensure more competition in the mobile communications market with low prices.

The Belgian mobile telecommunications market has a striking new player: Mega. The Liège energy company is entering a new market that, according to CEO Thomas Coune, is close to its current activities. “We are entrepreneurs, so it is logical that we regularly feel the urge to start something new. The intention is that our telecommunications division will eventually become as important as our energy division.”

The telecommunications activities will be bundled in the Mega Telecom division, which will employ twenty people. As the telecommunications industry grows, this number will increase. Mega will use Orange’s mobile network.

Subscriptions and prices

Mega claims to be a price breaker in the energy market and wants to be so in the mobile market too. The company says it wants to offer “the same mobile connectivity, just cheaper.” It introduces a mobile offer consisting of three formulas. Consumption, bills and subscriptions can be monitored via a mobile application.

formula price per month mobile data minutes of conversation Write sms
spark 12 euros 5GB 150 150
lightning 17 euros 15GB Unlimited Unlimited
star 27 euros 60GB Unlimited Unlimited

However, the claim that Mega is cheaper than the competition is controversial. For example, if we compare the formulas with Mobile Vikings, which announced adjusted formulas last week, you get 4GB for ten euros per month, 15GB for 15 euros, 30GB for 20 euros and 85GB for 25 euros. With Mobile Vikings you get more data for a lower monthly amount.

Even as an energy supplier, Mega does not have an impeccable reputation. Due to the sometimes high prepayment invoices, the company has been in the news less positively on several occasions. Mega has always defended this by arguing that it saves customers a high final bill. As a telecommunications provider, we hope that customers do not disapprove of the bills.

The network operator Fluvius, which is also indirectly involved in the telecommunications sector in a joint venture with Telenet, made it clear that telecommunications and energy are sometimes close together. This project, called Wyre, had a slow start in 2023.
