CYSSME can count on a support package from the European Commission worth 7 million euros. The initiative is committed to increasing the cybersecurity of SMEs.

CYSSME will be included in the European Commission’s Digital Europe program. This means she is entitled to a grant of 7 million euros. CYSSME is a partnership of European SMEs to increase the cyber resilience of smaller companies: the acronym stands for “Cybersecurity for SMEs”. With the funding, the organization also receives an official mandate from the European Commission

SMEs are a vulnerable group as they often do not have the resources to hire specialist staff and/or invest in sufficient security solutions. Cybercriminals know this all too well, which is why more and more SMEs are being targeted by cybercriminals. Thanks to European support, European SMEs can turn to CYSSME for additional resources. CYSSME hopes to support 300 SMEs over three years and has allocated a budget of €20,000 per company.

Companies can submit an application, although CYSSME specifies some criteria. For example, companies are not allowed to employ more than 250 people or have a turnover of more than 50 million euros. In the context of the upcoming NIS2 legislation, CYSSME may allow some exceptions to these rules to help companies comply with legal requirements.

Belgian side

CYSSME is a European initiative but has its origins in our country. One of the driving forces is Ulrich Seldeslachts, managing director of the security company L-Sec. “There are many indigenous technologies in Europe, but we still need to ensure that these technologies are adopted. A one-size-fits-all approach to cyber resilience doesn’t work for SMBs. We need a more targeted approach with an individual strategy for each company,” says Seldeslachts in the press release.

Seldeslachhts and L-Sec obviously can’t do it alone. Other Belgian companies actively involved include Unizo, BA, Ceeyu, Cross-border Commerce, NoCode X, Toreon and AXS Guard. A few months ago we spoke to Alex Ongena from AXS Guard about the cyber threats facing SMBs.
