Protesters and riot police clashed in Buenos Aires for a second day in a row as Argentina’s Congress debates an economic reform bill known as the “omnibus bill.”

Officers with shields pushed back protesters outside the Congressional complex and used water cannons to break up the protest.

Citizens were seen throwing objects at police and armored vehicles.

Argentina’s lower house discussed on Thursday a bill proposed by President Javier Miley to reform the South American country’s economy.

Argentina suffers from a high debt burden, with inflation exceeding 200%, and capital controls aimed at protecting the peso.

Miley faces a major challenge in pushing the bill through because his coalition has only a minority in both chambers, meaning he needs to win over allies.

Several opposition deputies left the Argentine Congress, condemning police repression during the demonstrations.

While the speeches took place in plenary session in the midst of debates on the law, tensions erupted between protesters and security forces in the vicinity of Congress.

Agents fired tear gas and rubber bullets, according to Left and Labor Front (FIT) lawmaker Nicolás del Caño, who said there were injuries. Coalition leader Miriam Bregman stressed that tensions stem from the fact that Security Minister Patricia Bullrich is “commanding the city” (Europa Press).
