Market analyst Gartner predicts that companies will lose trust in biometric facial recognition due to the increasing power of deepfake videos.
Deepfake videos are AI-created videos that are a copy of a person’s face. This technology is constantly improving, which threatens the security of biometric authentication. Market analyst Gartner predicts that companies will no longer use this identification method from 2026.
Biometric method
Creating a deepfake is not that difficult today, although according to regular models it still contains enough erroneous details to filter them out. If someone with a little more time and expertise puts their effort into a deepfake video, it can quickly produce credible results. Such videos pose a security risk here.
For example, many smartphones use facial recognition to unlock certain apps. A recent survey by SAS shows that almost three quarters of Belgian respondents are willing to use biometric methods such as facial recognition instead of passwords to make a payment or transaction.
Security risks
Market analyst Gartner is now warning about the dangers that facial identification poses in the long term. The development of AI-generated images continues to increase, giving deepfakes greater credibility. This would make the security of biometric authentication inefficient. Gartner predicts that by 2026, thirty percent of companies will no longer trust identification based on facial recognition.
