Apple is considering releasing its first foldable device in the next few years, measuring 7 to 8 inches, which could replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini.

This is the latest statement from the Korean publication Electric. According to the report, Apple is looking for a time frame to launch the device between 2016 and 2017. But Apple is also actively developing an OLED ‌iPad mini‌, so Apple remains vague about the nature and features of the complex device. Speculations are reportedly still rife in the industry as to whether there will be a foldable iPhone or a foldable iPad.

Samsung Display and LG Display have reportedly been sending 7-inch and 8-inch foldable panel samples to Apple since last year. Among panel companies, Samsung is more active than LG in developing Apple’s foldable panels and is more likely to be the main supplier of foldable panels if Apple decides to launch them in 2026.

Apple, Samsung Display and LG Display are said to have “different ideas” for Ultraglycine (UTG), the folding window of the panel cover, and the hinge concept that forms the basis of the product’s mechanism. It is estimated that the reason for this is the difference in evaluation between the durability and reliability of the product.

Once the mass production decision is made, Samsung is expected to create a foldable panel in the 6th generation OLED A3 or A4 series that make up the ‌iPhone‌ OLED panels. Apple is also reportedly working on a larger 20.5-inch foldable device, which is expected to launch later than the 7-8-inch device.
