Microsoft is borrowing money from macOS and Linux and will soon introduce the sudo command for Windows 11. You can temporarily increase your privileges to perform tasks using a sudo command.

Windows Latest has already previewed the sudo command in Windows 11, although you shouldn’t expect an immediate rollout to the general public. The term sounds familiar to macOS and Linux users: the sudo command is programmed into every Unix-based operating system. Running the command temporarily elevates your privileges, allowing you to perform tasks that would normally only be permitted to a single user Superuserwithout having to log in with additional rights.

In Windows 11, the function is located in the developer menu system in the settings. You still have to activate it manually and developer mode must also be activated in this menu. A sudo script can then be run in PowerShell or the command prompt.

Different configurations

You can configure the behavior of sudo commands in several ways. Windows offers you three setting options for opening and executing commands. You choose In a new windowthen the command will be executed in a new terminal window that will open automatically while this is at In line stays within the currently active window. The institution With input disabled causes mouse and/or keyboard input to be temporarily blocked to prevent authorized actions during execution.

Windows Settings warns that sudo commands expose your device and personal data to security risks and can potentially damage your device. The details of how and why are not explained in detail. With great power comes great responsibility, even more so when you run sudo commands.

Microsoft will therefore not roll out sudo commands without testing them thoroughly first. Windows Lastest expects the Windows 24H2 update to roll out later this year at the earliest. It is possible at any time for new features to be subsequently transferred to older Windows versions.
