I gave my old tablet a second life with Tivify: it’s now a pocket TV for the kitchen

I change my phone every two years and use it for almost everything possible (I don’t like to play games too much), but with tablets it’s a different story: we have it at home and use it mainly for surfing the internet. Watch things and respond to emails on a larger screen than your phone’s. It can be said that The tablet is very simple and easy to use.

In fact, the tablets in my home don’t die because they fell or no longer have batteries; Rather, they wear out and gather dust in the drawer before being put out of use. However, just because they are old does not mean that they are no longer useful, and in fact, we fulfilled one wish with our old Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2016): Use it as a mini television in the kitchen.

The golden retirement of the tablet: using it as a television

Using an old tablet to watch content was something I already knew would work wonders, and that was actually the fate of my mother-in-law’s tablet with ATV Launcher, but the truth is that we normally watch TV series and movies on our Smart TV. In fact, what I always liked about the kitchen was the company of the television in the background, just like in my family home. Good now What keeps us in the background is that our old tablet acts as a television..

There are several apps and services to watch DTT channels, TDT Channels is one example, but personally I like the experience and interface better of Tivify, which has an app in its free version. More than 200 free channels and the opportunity to watch them from the beginning If you catch them it’s started. The free Tivify plan works for me because I mainly use it to watch ETB and practice my Basque while cooking, but you should keep in mind that it contains ads, lacks control functions, does not record or view content from the last seven days. But traditional TV didn’t have that either.

We have the tablet with a stand, and its natural home is on the shelf, next to the toaster, but if for some reason I’m interested in seeing something, I move it down to the counter. We thought about hanging it on the wall, but since we only wanted to benefit from it without spending a single euro, we eliminated the option of buying a frame or something similar for this purpose.

There isn’t much history in using Tivify: I downloaded the application from Google Play Store and installed it. Although registration is not required in theory, the login screen appears from time to time, so I created an account and am always logged in.

From here, just go into the Tivify app and for the sake of agility, I go to the channels from the home screen (too full of options for my taste) and tap the three lines in the top left corner. Now I just need to go to what interests me, touch it and that’s it: I can now watch DTT on my old tablet while cooking. Actually, I couldn’t get the interface to adapt to the horizontal layout when I browsed the platform, but surprisingly, when I looked at the content, it did.

Although the tablet is already eight years old and has a very old and basic Exynos 7870 accompanied by 2 GB of RAM, experience delivered where it matters: In general, it takes a few seconds to open and install applications, but once you start playing a channel, it works very smoothly and offers audio and video through its 10.1-inch, 1,920 x 1,200 resolution LCD screen. This isn’t a solution or a diagonal to write home about, nor is it the little television set in my parents’ kitchen, as it was before.

make it come alive

Tivify brings together over 200 channels, dozens of on-demand video catalogs and the most popular apps in one place, so you can access the most complete entertainment offering.
