Those looking to get rich quick can try anything from necropolis to Bitcoin, but unlike the uncertain world of internet investments, gold is known to hold its value. Unfortunately, finding the biggest nugget in history doesn’t mean you’re set for life. Even today, if you start looking for gold, you may not be able to save your treasure.
The world’s largest gold nugget was found in Victoria, Australia, on February 5, 1869. Two miners from Cornwall, John Dezon and Richard Oates, discovered the nugget while prospecting. The nugget, called “Welcome Stranger”, weighed 72 kilograms (158.7 pounds) and was 61 centimeters (24 inches) long.
The two men took the bullion to the town of Dunolly to be weighed at the London Chartered Bank. Unfortunately, the ingot was too large to fit on the scale and broke before it could be photographed. Copies of the drawings made at that time were made. The two men escaped with just under £10,000 and the bullion was broken up and melted into gold bars. BBC News suggests that a similar nugget if found today would be worth around £2 million.
In other giant nugget news, Pepita Canaa takes the top spot as the largest gold nugget still in existence; This large nugget weighs 60 kilograms (134 pounds). It was discovered by Julio de Deus Filho in Brazil in 1983. The bullion is currently on display in the “Gold Room” of the Museum of Values of the Central Bank of Brazil (Museu de Valores do Banco Central).
The development of various technologies plays an important role in the discovery of large gold deposits, especially in the case of İnanç Eli. Discovered by Kevin Hillier in 1980, this large nugget is the largest piece of gold ever found with a metal detector. Although this extraordinary nugget was also found in Australia, it is currently on display in a casino in Las Vegas after being sold for over $1 million. It is said to contain 875 ounces of gold.
The troy ounce was used to weigh gold before the introduction of the metric system, and is still used in the jewelry industry to weigh precious metals and precious stones. One troy ounce is equal to 31.1 grams. This differs from the more familiar Avouardupois system, where 1 ounce usually equals 28.5 grams. Gold prices sold today may be quoted in troy ounce prices but are usually expressed in troy ounces.
