Artificial intelligence helped fraudsters in Hong Kong embezzle $25 million

An employee of a multinational company in Hong Kong made transactions worth $25 million during a video conference at the request of the alleged boss. As it turned out, the remaining participants of the meeting turned out to be deepfakes, a product of artificial intelligence.

According to Ukrinform’s report, BFMTV tells about this scam.

“During the multi-party video conference it turned out that all the people except him were not real, but looked more real than in life,” a colleague of the person concerned said.

The company employee also explained that all the participants “looked real.” Thus, he made approximately fifteen transactions totaling HK$200 million or US$25 million into five different bank accounts.

After receiving an email with an invitation from her manager in the UK, the employee considered a possible scam, but the presence of colleagues on the video conference reassured her. He learned the truth when he called these colleagues after the meeting.

According to the investigation, the fraud was carried out with maximum professionalism. It is claimed that the fraudsters uploaded videos of employees of a multinational company, imitating their voices with the help of artificial intelligence, for several months.

As Ukrinform reports, the American company Google has introduced a new service based on artificial intelligence that helps convert text into ImageFX images.
