Digi Belgium is busy providing fiber to 10,000 Brussels homes. This is what De Tijd writes. Last year, Digi announced that it would begin expanding its own fiber optic cable this year, especially in urban areas. There were no details about this at the time, but an initial test phase now appears to be in full swing.
The focus is on Anderlecht and Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. Digi mainly lays fiber optic cables along the facades. The provider’s aim is to carry out as little earthwork as possible in this phase. With the pilot, Digi wants to investigate how much the rollout will cost and how local rules and authorities affect the plans. Digi will then compare these results with other countries in which it operates.
Digi Belgium is a collaboration between Citymesh and the Romanian Digi, which is active in its home country but also in Spain, Italy and soon Portugal. The provider has already gained a lot of fiber optic experience in other countries.
Anyone who sees Digi fiber optics on their facade can actually become a customer later this year. This makes the residents of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek the most connected in the country. Proximus has already installed fiber optic cables and Wyre is also working on it.
The initial results of the tests are hopeful and sound promising, although Digi has selected districts with ideal starting conditions. If all goes well, there will probably be more fiber optics. Digi also does not rule out collaborations with other providers.
