Nearly forty percent of IT professionals always have their webcams on during online meetings, while fifteen percent never turn them on. This comes from a reader survey by ITdaily.
Online meetings have become part of everyday life for many employees since 2020. Whether the camera should be on or not remains a difficult dilemma for many. For some it is a given that the camera is always on, while others prefer not to show themselves. ITdaily investigated the meeting habits of (Belgian) IT professionals. 209 respondents took part in the survey.
The majority, 39 percent, say they always meet with a webcam. However, for many IT professionals, whether or not the webcam is turned on depends on the context of the meeting. 28 percent will only arrange to meet with a webcam if it has added value for the meeting, fourteen percent first look at what the other person is doing and four percent are interested in their appearance.
Webcam off
Finally, the remaining fifteen percent never turn on their webcam during an online meeting. There are good reasons for this too. Research from Harvard Business Review in 2021 showed that whether or not the camera is on has a greater impact on employees’ psychological distress than the number of online meetings crammed into a workday.
