We’ve been here for a while talks about Microsoft’s plans for Windows 12, and the truth is, the closer we get to its launch, the more we doubt it. It seems quite clear that Redmond has a lot to think about, and that something that will play a decisive role in the decision (if it hasn’t already) is the development of Windows 11, which by some indicators is finally starting to approach Windows 10 in market share.

For a few months now, rumors and supposed leaks have started to emerge pointing in a very clear direction, and it is that Windows 12 will be introduced and launched in the same year 2024. What’s more, we even had some semi-official confirmation like the one from November last year, so we already had a new version of Windows ready this year. That way, Windows 11 would be the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system for three years, half as long as its predecessor, the still-prevailing Windows 10.

However, A few weeks later, it became clear that things were not so clear, and that therefore Microsoft was still hesitating how to proceed. That is, whether to release Windows 12 in 2024 or to postpone it for at least a year. As my colleague Isidro pointed out at the time, this would force Microsoft to keep three versions of its desktop operating system fully up-to-date at the same time, and this is clearly a significant extra effort that cannot be justified, especially considering the slow but steady growth of Windows 11, which I already mentioned.

Now everything indicates that the big changes planned for this year, which have long been referred to as Windows 12, are actually this year’s big update, i.e. Windows 11 24H2. And as we can read in NeoWin, this would be confirmed and subsequently Windows 12 won’t see the light of day until 2024. Documents published by the company in Microsoft Learn confirm the work on Windows 11 24H2, which is expected to be one of the two big moments (pun intended) of the year for Windows, along with the launch of Moments 5, another major system update. .

There are quite a few users who couldn’t make the leap due to Windows 11’s minimum requirements, but there are also many others who, despite being able to do it, didn’t find enough reasons to do so. Launching Windows 12 in 2024 would mean agreeing with those users, but ensuring that Windows 11’s features grow substantially that year.
