The Japanese government is providing more than $56 million to support software development in the field of productive artificial intelligence.

Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Saito Ken said the government plans to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) capacity so that the country can continue to make innovative contributions to the future.

Specifically, his department will provide ¥8.4 billion, or more than $56 million, in AI venture funding to seven organizations, including a number of startups and a university.

They will be given six months of free access to Google’s cloud services. It will be funded by the ministry to provide access to the large amounts of data needed to train generative artificial intelligence systems, known as large language models.

Recipients of this government funding aim to develop large language models that support the Japanese language.

Such artificial intelligence technologies will have various industrial applications, in particular they will be used for full automation of driving.
