Oracle would charge high license fees for customers who want to run their Oracle database on Azure, experts warn.

Oracle charges the equivalent of one Oracle processor license for customers who have two vCPUs Oracle Database@Azure embrace. This is evident from Oracle’s own documentation and makes the offer an expensive one. This is the conclusion experts come to in responses to The Register. Essentially, this means customers will pay twice as much to transfer their licenses to Azure.

Not a one-stop shop

The problem with Oracle Database@Azure is that you’re essentially dealing with two parties, even though the solution promises tight integration. You have to buy things from Oracle and from Microsoft. Apparently it’s expensive.

Oracle launched Oracle Database@Azure in September last year. The solution enables the deployment of an Oracle database on an Exadata system in an Azure data center. The database is then seamlessly integrated into the Azure ecosystem, where a customer may reside the rest of their infrastructure and data. The offer is potentially interesting for such situations, even if it certainly doesn’t seem to be the cheapest way to run your Oracle database.
