We will have to wait a little longer for the arrival of the Google Pixel Fold 2 (and actually we’ll get into that point and various possible scenarios later in this report), but I personally admit that this is one of the announcements I’d like to see happen the most. And, I also said it before, I would be especially happy if the search engine company would dare to launch it in the Spanish market, although I understand that it is somewhat complicated, since the foldable smartphone market is not yet very big in our country.

As you surely remember, Google introduced the first generation Pixel Fold last May, during Google I/O 2023a device that directly competes with the great benchmark of its form factor, the Galaxy Z Fold, and I was able to read after its launch review Americans, in which they evaluated this bet quite positively. It’s not a perfect device, of course (is there any, of any type, worthy of that qualification?), but in general, Google seems to have done a good job landing this market.

Now we have to remember two key points of the technical specifications of the first Pixel Fold:

  • SoC: Google Tensor G2.
  • FRAME: 12GB LPPDR5.

With these two points in mind, we now have everything we need to evaluate the information exclusively published by Android Authority, that the source was leaked, that Google is working on a Google Pixel Fold 2 equipped with a Tensor G4 SoC and no less than 16 gigabytes of RAM. The second point is interesting because it points to better performance, but where the most essential part is undoubtedly in the choice of SoC.

Pixel Fold 2 will appear with Tensor G4 and 16 gigabytes of RAM

You’ve probably already noticed: indeed, if this leak is confirmed Google would skip a generation of its integrated device, the Tensor G3, going directly from the G2 to the G4, a chip that focuses, even more than its predecessors, on computational tasks inherent to artificial intelligence. This assumption means that while we still have to wait for its launch, more anticipation is being generated around this yet-to-be-released Pixel Fold 2.

And how many months are we talking about? As I said at the beginning and as a result of the choice of this SoC (if it was based on the G3, it would be assumed that it would be introduced in May 2024) There are several possible scenarios, which I summarize below:

  • Google I/O 2024: This is the first option that comes to mind for many. Since the first generation was introduced at the developer event in 2023, the annual refresh rate would lead us to the presentation of the Google Pixel Fold 2 in May of this year, at the launch of the event. However, the most notable thing would be if the company moved the arrival of the Pixel 9 SoC to May with its flagship smartphones, instead of reserving it for October.
  • Presentation of Google Pixel 9: The conclusion of the previous scenario surely led you to consider this other option. What if Google decides to unify the presentation of its new generation at the October event? That way, the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel Fold 2 (all equipped with the Tensor G2) would debut hand-in-hand, and Google would only reserve the Pixel 9a for later, likely May 2025.
  • Google I/O 2025: But let’s not forget that no one has officially confirmed to us that the Pixel Fold will be refreshed every year. It’s something we’ve taken for granted due to a number of factors, but perhaps Google has decided to give its first generation more commercial travel. In this case, if two-year cycles are being considered at this point, we may have to wait until the May 2025 developer event for this renewal to occur. However, against this possibility, I see that the Pixel 9 with a Tensor G4 SoC would coexist in the market for just over half a year with the first generation foldable, powered by the G2. This means that the supposed flagship device would have a gap of two generations.

Personally, I lean towards the first two.Postponing the Pixel Fold 2 launch to May 2025 would be too much time. A year in the case of the first or a year and a half in the case of the second seem to me to be much more reasonable terms. And taking a little more risk in the prediction (and probably wrong), I see more sense in Google betting on the annual cycle. Granted, I’d push the Tensor G4 presentation to May instead of reserving it for the Pixel 9 announcement in October, but we’re talking about what would be the absolute flagship of the house’s offerings, so it makes sense that it’s also the one marking the debut of a new generation SoC.
