The US House of Representatives dealt a major blow to Republican President Mike Johnson by voting against firing top border agent Joe Biden. In another key vote, Republicans failed to pass their plan to send economic aid to Israel while trying to separate the issue of fortifying the U.S.-Mexico border.

The House voted 214 to 216 to block the committee’s complaint against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Four Republicans defied their leaders and joined Democrats to oppose the charges.

Earlier, Senate Republicans appeared to have mortally wounded a bipartisan deal on border security. This measure was an attempt to solve the same problems that they wanted Mayorkas to stopincluding record numbers of illegal immigrants arriving at the southern border with Mexico.

“Everything indicates that this bill will not even be introduced in the Senate. Because? For one simple reason: Donald Trump. Because Donald Trump thinks it’s bad for him politically,” Biden said.

Republican senators opposed the $118 billion measure, which includes new military aid to Ukraine and Israel, leading Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell to conclude the effort would fail.

Some Republicans have said the bill does not effectively address the surge of migrants at the border, and criticism began almost immediately after the complex bill was unveiled.

“It seems to me and most of our members that we have no real chance of passing the legislation,” McConnell said at a news conference.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to press ahead with plans for Wednesday’s procedural vote on the bill, knowing it was unlikely to succeed.

Polls show immigration has become a top issue for voters as Trump prepares for a likely White House rematch against Biden in November.

Johnson said that if the Senate approves it, the project would have been “dead on arrival” to your camera.

House Homeland Security Committee last week two articles were approvedtitle against Mayorkas, a nearly unprecedented move against a member of the president’s Cabinet over a political dispute.

This has only happened once in American history, in 1876, when the Secretary of War was impeached for criminal misconduct.

Member of the House of Representatives Tom McClintock announced an investigation into the Mayorkas case failed to “find an impeachable offense.”

During the debate, McClintock said, “Secretary Mayorkas is guilty of mismanaging our immigration laws on a cosmic scale.” However, he added that the Constitution does not contemplate the use of impeachment as a weapon in partisan disputes.

House Republicans argue that Mayorkas has been deliberately lax in securing the long border with Mexico. and violated the public trust by making false statements to Congress.

About 2 million migrants were apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol at the Mexico border compared with the same period last year in fiscal year 2023.

Mayorkas has denied any wrongdoing and defended his performance.

Aid to Israel shipwrecked

The House of Representatives rejected a Republican bill that would provide $17.6 billion to Israel.

Democrats are set to vote on a broader proposal that would also provide aid to Ukraine, international humanitarian funding and new money for border security.

The vote was 250 to 180, which was insufficient because it was introduced through a fast-track procedure requiring a two-thirds majority for approval.
