NASA’s Juno space station approached Jupiter’s moon Io and took detailed photographs of volcanic activity.
This was reported by Ukrinform’s Sciencealert report.
There are approximately 400 active volcanoes on the surface of Io, and on February 3, Juno managed to photograph a gas explosion from one of them into space.
As is known, Io is within the sphere of influence of “competing” gravitational forces. It is pulled by the mass of Jupiter on the one hand, and by two nearby moons, Europa and Ganymede, on the other. This gravitational “pull” causes Io’s extreme volcanic activity. Satellite volcanoes can spew fountains of red-hot lava for tens of kilometers.
Io is slightly larger than the Moon, but Io’s largest volcano, Loki Patera, is twice the size of Earth’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa.
As Ukrinform reported, on December 30, NASA’s Juno spacecraft passed Jupiter’s moon Io at its shortest distance in 20 years.
