Intel appeals after Ice Lake, Tiger Lake and Alder Lake allege patent infringement

Intel is appealing after R2 sued the American chip giant for infringing its patent. This could mean a ban on the sale of certain hardware.

R2 Semiconductor accuses Intel of patent infringement. Due to these allegations, the German patent court has issued an interim injunction against the sale of some Intel chips. The controversial technology is found in Intel processors of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth generations (Ice Lake, Tiger Lake and Alder Lake). Intel is appealing this, arguing that R2 is only interested in receiving large amounts of money from innovators like Intel.

Intel is appealing

Intel now wants to appeal the decision, which would mean a ban on the sale of certain devices. The basis of the complaint is hardware from HP and Dell, although the chips are of course in many other computers and servers. Ice Lake server processors (Xeon) are also mentioned.

A close contact with Intel said some of the processors affected by the lawsuit have already been discontinued, adding that the case does not affect Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh, the company’s thirteenth and fourteenth generation chips. The older chips are generally no longer relevant for endpoints, but are for (more budget-friendly) servers.

Intel says R2 is using these lawsuits to extort large sums of money from innovators like Intel. R2 had previously filed a lawsuit against Intel in the US, but was unsuccessful. Now R2 is moving the campaign against Intel to Europe. Intel denies that R2 is a real company with purposes other than patent litigation. The controversial patent is said to concern the regulation of voltages in CPUs.
