This seems to be the week of leaks about the upcoming Google Pixel Fold 2. So, if two weeks ago we had leaks about the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 8a and Pixel Watch 3 (all in the same week, as surprising as it may seem), now it’s the turn of the future generation of the foldable Google. So yesterday it was revealed that this future model will be equipped with a Tensor G4 SoC and 16 gigabytes of RAM, which could be a more or less remarkable move depending on when it is announced and launched.
Now, just 24 hours after that leak, Android Authority (who also signed off on yesterday’s exclusive) is giving us more information about the device by showing The goal is the design of the Google Pixel Fold 2’s main cameraA design that, as you can see in the image, has been particularly disruptive on the Pixel line for several generations now, as it would break the design of the camera module and move to the current full-width horizontal bar.
Instead, Google seems to have considered resort to the island format in the upper left part of the back of the mobile, a much more conventional design that, yes, aims to retain a significant camera bulge, compared to other manufacturers’ designs that seem to be working to reduce it to a greater or lesser extent. So what is the reason for this change? Well, we can certainly find the answer in the picture that leaked from the media.
If we look closely at this image and compare it to the ones we saw on the first generation model, It gives a clear sense that the Google Pixel Fold 2 is “thinner” than its predecessor, which will result in changes in the shape of the front screen as well as the main (folding) screen. Let’s recall the features of the current model:
So what can we infer from this change, and it seems the source of the leak would confirm it, Google is looking for a design closer to a 1:1 aspect ratio (although it’s not quite the same) for the Pixel Fold 2 compared to the current 6:5, which is already much closer to a square format than a panoramic one.
So, as you may have guessed, this reduced width would significantly complicate the placement of all the elements that make up the main chamber in a single horizontal rowwhich would lead Google to resort to this design, which, yes, violates the properties of the rest of the family, including models that have not yet been introduced, but which have already been released.
There are still quite a few aspects about the future Pixel Fold 2 that have not been revealed, among them the specifications of the modules that make up this main camera, as well as quite a few doubts about the moment that Google chose for its presentation (I reflected on this yesterday when I talked about the jump to the Tensor G4 SoC). However, given the interest in Google smartphone leaks, we can be sure that there will be more leaks of this type. And for many, myself included, they will be high-octane fuel for our expectations.
