An international group of evolutionary biologists and paleontologists have discovered the oldest frog remains to date. It lived about 100 million years ago, in the time of the dinosaurs, and died with its belly full of eggs.
By scanning the fossil with a CT scanner, the research team determined that the frog belonged to this species. Gansubatrachus qilianensis.
Since eggs were found in the ancient amphibian’s abdomen, experts suggested that it may have died during mating. During the breeding process, male frogs often exhibit amplexus, or “cuddle”, behavior – they cling to the female and tightly cover her with their forepaws while laying their eggs. Amplexus can last for hours or even days, and females are in danger of dying from exhaustion and starvation.
The researchers ruled out old age as the cause of death and found that the frog did not die due to environmental problems (algae blooms or changes in water conditions).
