Disney Fortnite? Disney announced an alliance with Epic Games to enter the video game market. will invest 1.5 billion dollars in its stake and will create a platform to launch content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars around its most popular game.
Investing in Epic Games “It probably represents our biggest foray into the world of video games.”explained Disney CEO Bob Iger and ensured that the investment “Not only is it timely, but it’s an important step when you look at the demographic trends, how the Alphas and Zs and even millennials are spending their time.”.
Disney lost 1.3 million subscribers to its Disney+ service last quarter after a price hike. However, it managed to cut losses from its on-demand content business by $300 million during that period. It’s clear that something is stirring at the streaming giants and its entry into the gaming market is proceeding rapidly. And it was obvious that video games are the biggest entertainment industry in the world.
Disney’s Fortnite and more
The scope of the project is ambitious… Disney describes it as “a whole new universe of games and entertainment” which will offer players a path “play, watch, shop and interact with characters and stories from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and more”. The platform will use the Unreal Engine graphics engine and plans to be “interoperable” with Fortnite and connect with online social gaming infrastructure.
And the alliance also fits into Epic Games’ plans. The publisher has expanded the reach of Fortnite and what started out as just a game in recent years battle royale expanded to a a hub for user-generated game modes and collaborations with third-party brands.
“Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of uniting their worlds with ours in Fortnite, and they use the Unreal Engine across their portfolio”explains Epic boss Tim Sweeney in the announcement. “Now we’re collaborating on something completely new to build an enduring, open and interoperable ecosystem that will bring the Disney and Fortnite communities together.”.
