Meta removed the Facebook and Instagram accounts of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
This was reported by CNN, according to Ukrinform’s report.
According to Meta’s report, Khamenei’s Facebook and Instagram accounts have been deactivated, meaning they have been permanently removed.
“We removed these accounts for repeatedly violating our policy on dangerous organizations and individuals,” a Meta representative said.
Company policy does not allow organizations or individuals that encourage or engage in violence to be on Meta. This also applies to individuals who glorify, support, or represent terrorist organizations designated by the U.S. government.
Meta did not give a specific reason why Khamenei’s account fell under this policy. The Iranian leader’s Instagram account had more than 5 million followers.
Iran has long been accused of arming Hamas, which the US State Department has declared a foreign terrorist organization. The State Department said in 2021 that the group received funds and weapons from Iran. Iran is also believed to be arming and training Yemen’s Houthis, who were re-designated as a foreign terrorist organization by President Biden last month.
Tehran officially denies involvement in Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel.
Meta began removing praise or messages supporting Hamas from its platforms after the EU condemned social networks for not doing enough to combat disinformation, Ukrinform reported.
