The US Federal Communications Commission has said robocalls that use AI-generated voices are illegal.
As reported by Ukrinform, Engadget reported this.
“Malicious people are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited robocalls to extort, impersonate celebrities, and misinform voters. “We are warning the scammers behind these robocalls,” said FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel.
He added that state attorneys general will now have new tools to combat this type of fraud and protect the public from such scams and misinformation.
The BBC notes that in late January, several thousand people received a fake robocall purporting to be from US President Joe Biden, urging voters to skip voting in the New Hampshire primary.
“Although the voice on the robocall appears to be President Biden’s voice, this message appears artificial,” the state Attorney General’s Office said at the time.
As Ukrinform reported, Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads, said it plans to flag all images created using artificial intelligence (AI) on social media platforms.
