Apple generally prefers to gradually improve its design for iOS, the operating system that underpins the iPhone. The last major overhaul came with iOS 16’s customizable lock screen. But unconfirmed rumors suggest that iOS 18 could offer a more comprehensive visual update, taking cues from VisionOS, the operating system that powers Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
According to the report ConfirmatoryVisionOS visuals may be included in iOS 18. Similar to iOS 18, VisionOS has a different aesthetic, with more rounded shapes, shadows, and a sense of depth achieved through floating, overlapping windows.
The report points to the revamped Apple TV app in tvOS 17.2 as the first evidence of this transition, noting that the new floating sidebar design is similar to VisionOS app layouts.
It’s important to note that The Verifier has a mixed track record with the accuracy of its predictions, making this rumor particularly speculative. Additionally, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that iOS 18 would see “ambitious changes,” but it’s not yet clear whether these will be interface updates or new AI-powered features.
Historically, Apple has supported different design languages for each of its operating systems. iOS, for example, never fully embraced round icons or deep shadows because those elements were available in watchOS or macOS.
Although these rumors have some truth, the VisionOS-inspired design change will most likely appear in tvOS as well. Apple TV’s larger screen format lends itself well to visual layouts with more depth and layering, the more characteristic elements of VisionOS.
Apart from the design changes, there are also speculations that Apple iOS 18 will bring artificial intelligence features to the iPhone. Samsung and Google are already leading the way in this field, and other Android brands are slowly following suit. Apple definitely does not want to be left behind in this race. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on any new developments in iOS 18.
