It also came at a low price with a brutal launch offer, but not all was positive on the platform. Next, As a user of the platform for about a year, I will tell you my opinion about SkyShowtime. because it has positive points and some negative points that add a lot of weight.
Let’s start by looking at my biggest strengths in SkyShowtime. Although there are more on one side than the other, in my opinion I will highlight both three positive and three negative aspects.
First, what really attracted me to the platform when it was announced was the catalogue. The truth is, I didn’t get many shows that I wanted to watch here, but there were ‘Halo’, ‘Frasier’, ‘Californication’, ‘The Office’, ‘Parks and Recreation’ or ‘Yellowstone’, among others. It’s something I want to watch again, see for the first time, or enjoy.
With these lines alone, plus the asking price, I had a good enough excuse to try it. Moreover, SkyShowtime is backed by Paramount NBC, DreamWorks, Universal and PeacockVery strong producers in the industry.
I’ve already watched ‘The Office’, but it’s one of those shows that I can watch at any time, and what’s more, it premiered with so many movies from legendary sagas that it’s always nice to watch again. In my words, that wardrobe conquered me.
And there are plenty of cartoons that the little ones in the house (or the house you share the bill with) enjoy.
Considering the production companies behind it, there is no doubt that the platform’s catalog will be of high quality. They have a long, long catalog of both TV series and, above all, movies, in my opinion.
They are slowly filling it up and some movies from 2023 are now available ‘Mission Impossible: Deadly Sentence’ is as interesting as ‘Transformers Awakening’ (normal, but mandatory if you liked ‘Beats Primal’) or ‘Asteroid City’.
In the series, the second season of ‘Halo’ has just arrived, in addition to the exclusive series on the platform there is also the wonderful ‘Poker Face’ and the “second part” of Frasier, so there is a lot of good content (and it is that good too, although it is normal on all platforms not).
It is clear that what initially won many of us over was the price. The 50% offer for life (unless you cancel) was extremely interesting as it left the monthly payment at 2.99 euros. This is truly a bargain for wardrobe newcomers..
And it doesn’t seem that high to me right now. It is true that the monthly payment costs 5.99 euros, which is high for the state of the platform, which I will now comment on, but an annual or semi-annual subscription leaves the monthly payment at 3.92 euros.
This is a very interesting price and you can also share the account. You have the ability to create five profiles, enter a PIN, create child profiles, and there are no restrictions like Netflix or Disney+ propose to do.
But, SkyShowtime also has its downsides Or that I don’t like them very much. Some of them were solved by half, but the truth is that the cheap price did not justify (and I do not think it justified) some decisions.
First, the initial pace of news was gradual.. The platform is slowly getting more content but has gotten used to the feed from Netflix, Disney+ or Movistar (yes, half of them don’t interest you but at least there’s plenty of new stuff to choose from) SkyShowtime’s slowness was something I didn’t like at first.
I once watched ‘Halo’, ‘Yellowstone’ and the new ‘Star Trek’. I kept thinking “What happens now?”. In fact, I admit that for about six months I only maintained the platform because it was cheap.
Now the batteries are starting to charge and we have interesting news in TV series and movies, but I still think there is very little new content, considering the number and power of the studios and production companies behind the platform.
From the night, SkyShowtime removed movies (all epics like ‘Fast and Furious’) and some episodes of series like ‘Dexter’, but most worryingly, series like ‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘Mr Robot’, ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Yellowstone’, ‘House’, ‘Parks and Recreations’ or ‘Office’, among others, and showed a missing persons report the following month.
This will leave the content catalog very limited and, above all, create uncertainty about what will happen to the series you subscribe to on the platform. We contacted SkyShowtime and they assured us it was an error, but although most of the content was not lost when the date arrived, other productions were.
They left me in the middle of ‘Parks and Recreation’ (thankfully it’s on HBO Max) and epics like ‘Fast and Furious’ are still yet to come. However, after a few weeks, they returned to the catalog and such a situation was not repeated, but the fact is that it was a significant negative point for subscribers in the first weeks of the platform’s implementation in our country.
Where they haven’t improved is both video and audio quality. The maximum resolution is 1,080p when using the legacy H.264 or AVC codec, but the bitrate isn’t optimal and it also doesn’t have a 5.1 audio solution.
It is possible to see works in content with many dark areas. there is something about the image that is not noticeable on others like Prime Video, Netflix or Disney+, and also the weight of the downloads is high, taking into account the image quality.
The truth is that on a mobile you won’t notice this because the pixel density and the size of the screen play in the content’s favor, but when you go to a 55 or 65 inch TV… it is noticeable.
Finally, Almost a year later my opinion of SkyShowtime is positive. It is true that there are negative points about the platform during this period that emphasize or have emphasized some points, but if I am hiding this, there is a reason for this. Definitely because of this wardrobe and some other special editions in the series.
Now, lastly, I have to say that if prices continue to rise on other platforms, I wouldn’t be surprised if SkyShowtime is the first platform to drop along with Netflix. And there is no time to see everything, and this is the biggest enemy of such platforms.
In my case, there is plenty of Prime Video and Disney+, although I chose HBO, SkyShowtime and Netflix. But there is also a film with an excellent catalog and not only video streaming platforms compete among themselvesBut there are also streaming gaming services looking to take over video platforms, like Xbox Game Pass.
Time is not unlimited and not only are there many platforms, but many are also increasing their prices. It’s fierce, ruthless competition, and the days continue to live the hours they have. And when that’s the case and With so many strong production companies behind us like SkyShowtime, we have to offer a little more You can choose to watch the movie on it in quality form (as some are available on other platforms with better quality) or in catalog form.
